Back To School Season?

You can’t miss it, no matter which store you walk through this time of the year, it’s “back to school” season in Georgia. As a kid, I always loved the new school supplies that came with a new school year: the not-yet-mussed notebooks with their clean white sheets of lined paper, the smell of newly sharpened pencils, a fresh bottle of Elmer’s school glue, and the snip-snip of sharp scissors. Back to school, for me, has always been a time of excitement, filled with anticipation of the adventures to come.

STAC is not back “in session” until early September, so what does this back to school season mean for us?  It was only 2 years ago that STAC came together in a whirlwind of determination and excitement, led by a group of parents determined to create an inclusive and welcoming space for our kids to learn and grow together. In a matter of only 10 weeks, STAC’s founding board incorporated, rented space, and recruited instructors and families to embark on the journey. So, in some ways, this back to school season is a time for STAC to look at where we have been, and to reflect on how far we have come.

At the same time, STAC is also excited to look forward to where we want to go. One thing that sets STAC apart from other homeschool groups is the fact that we operate with a Board of Directors composed of members of our community. The Board is committed to the best business practices, and to financial transparency. Our first board members have all now fulfilled their original terms of service, and so this back to school season opens with a new “year 3” STAC board with goals that will continue to lead our organization forward. It is a thrilling time to be mapping out STAC’s journey to support our families in lifelong learning, and continuing to build our inclusive community.

STAC is also excited to have a new website, where it will be easy to see upcoming events, to contact our board and instructors, and to find information about all that we do. We have amazing new classes for all ages (adults included!), fun parties planned, and many opportunities for getting to know each other and building community.

So, while STAC may not officially be “back to school” quite yet, it is a great season to be part of the secular, inclusive, nurturing community that we are creating. If you are already part of STAC, we are glad you are here. If you are curious about what we do and how we do it, spend some time on our website or contact one of our board members to learn more.
